Couple with triplets cry out after govt offers bag ofrice,N2k and 12 toilet tissues

Mr. Asiegbu Mmadubuko, a native of Akaeze village, Urum in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State whose wife was delivered of triplets recently, is writhing in deep agony. Tuesday, June 16, 2015 would remain indelible in their minds. It was the day his wife, Oluchukwu and the triplets in her womb were pulled out from the jaws of death. In the early hours of that day, at about 2am, Oluchukwu whowas heavily pregnant came under intense pressure of labour. Her husband, who was alerted, made concerted effort to save the situation but as soon as they stepped out of their house, a baby started coming out. With intense pain and agony, she laid helplessly on the ground, pushing the baby outall alone. Her hubby couldn’t help as he knew nothing about how to handle a pregnant woman in labour.Asiegbu told their heartrending story toSaturday Sun“On the 16th June, 2015 around 2am, my wife woke me upamid deep groaning, telling me that she was in labour. Before I could lead her out of the house in order to take her to the local birth attendant where she used to go to for antenatal, the baby started coming out. The whole event surrounding it was so strange to me because I had never witnessed that kind of thing before. I don’t know what to do and where to start. Luckily, there’s a nurse livingin our neighbourhood so I quickly ran to her house to solicit for her a$$istance. When she came, she was apparently confused too as she could not give me satisfactory answer on the cause of the continued painful moaning of my wife despite the fact that a baby had come out. With hot tears in my eyes, I painfully and helplessly watched my wife going down. I couldn’t bear it; hence, I summoned courage and went down to the local birth attendant who presided over her antenatal although it’s a bit far from my house. At first, she declined to come to our aid saying she could not come out by that time of the night but I begged fervently; explaining the pathetic condition of my wife. I told her thatI don’t understand what the first nurse was doing and that I can’t afford to lose my wife.“When we got to my house, we took her inside the room to ascertain the exact problem because the baby came out while we were outside. Before we knew it, my wife was delivered of a second baby. I never expected that. In fact, I was dumbfounded. I don’t know whether to start rejoicing or what. You know that kind of thing. I was very concerned about the health condition of my wife that night. Still surprised, they told me that the third child has come out. Ha! I never expected that my wife would be delivered of twins talk more of triplets. Just then, my wife collapsed; shaking very convulsively. She was bleeding too. Lord! I was seriously devastated. At once, I was gasping for breath. It felt like the whole air in the world has been exhausted. But the nurse said I should bring her to her own ‘clinic’. She said she could handle it. There again the problem of transport means popped up. Butluckily, my brother’s car was available so he came over and we headed to the nurse’s apartment. But my spirit was not comfortable with the treatment the nurse was giving her because she wasn’t responding to the treatment as expected. I was praying fervently for the day to break so that I could seek alternative means.“In the morning, I rushed her to Amaku General Hospital, Awka. I was hoping that the government would come to our aid given the condition we found ourselves. But before I knew it, expenses were heavily raining on me. I never minded because my major concern was my wife and the triplets. But there again, she started shaking convulsively in the hospital. That was when the health workers knew it was a serious matter. Thank God they were able to manage the convulsion and bleeding and other complications. Thereafter, I paid for some pints of blood that she was given and numerous expensive drugs. I was paying for drugs every day. I expended about N200,000 which I borrowed from the village meeting in that hospital. That is in addition to N180,000 I had earlier saved, waiting for her delivery date. At a point, I told them that the money I borrowed has been exhausted. I pleaded with themto direct me on how I can get a$$istance from the AnambraState government.”At this point, Asiegbu paused for a while, took deep breath, and continued. Apparently trying to stop tears from cascading his chins, he told Saturday Sun that the health workers abandoned his wife and the babies to their fate for his inability to pay their bills adding that some of his lenders have started demanding payback.“Sadly, because I was no longer able to pay for their numerous medical bills and drugs, they stopped attending to my wife; you know how hospital people used to behave. As we speak, I owe many people heavily. The first money I borrowed was N100,000 and later on I borrowed another N100,000 making it N200,000 plus other smaller amounts I borrowed. I also paid the previous two nurses who attended to her in the village N10,000 each. Nevertheless, I thank God for everything” he said, adding that “The health workers did not tell me exactly what the problem was, rather, they were blaming the local nurses who attended to her in the village. They said she was supposed to undergo caesarean operation. I said God forbid; thanking God it was not through operation. I told them since God has madeit that way they should do the needful as my major concern was the welfare of my wife and triplets. They kept writing drugs upon drugs and there was nothing concrete they said was the cause of the convulsion. But I suspected she was short of blood as she had bled throughout the time her labour lasted.”When Saturday Sun visited their residence, their equally restive mother, Oluchukwu  complained bitterly that“my children are not feeding well as they should. A quantityof milk that is meant for one person is shared among the three; and I must say it is affecting them seriously. Also, breastfeeding them without adequate balanced food intake,is affecting me too. I’m not yet back to my normal self, health wise. I have not been going to postnatal because things are quite hard for us financially.”Her husband, Asiegbu told Saturday Sun that“due to lack of money, we left the hospital before the due date to the village. As we speak, my wife is still sick. The newly born babies are not feeding well. All we are offeringthem is pap. There is no way she can breastfeed the threeof them at the same time. The nursing mother should be feeding very well so that the brea$t would be producing enough rich milk for the infants. I am just managing the whole thing. There are several nutritional foods they shouldbe eating but because there is no cash in my hand they don’t. We are pa$$ing through difficulty now. Her postpartum has been ruled out because there is no money.”“At a point, I wrote a letter to the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development humbly requesting for theira$$istance. I also attached pictures of all of us while in the hospital. But since that month of June to date, they did not respond. My wife, knowing the condition she was pa$$ing through, complained that she and her new babies were feeding poorly. Truly she was right. I had to go back to theministry to know what has been holding back my humble request for a$$istance but the commissioner wasn’t on seat. The officials I met kept directing me from one office to another. When I went to Child Department, I didn’t see anybody but a corps member. She told me that the workersin that department did not come because their children were sick. She directed me to come back later without anyspecific date. Later they directed me to another office, which also directed me back to Child Department.I waited a whole day without result and I had to go back home. Unfortunately, my first two children, a girl and a boy fell seriously sick due to malaria fever recently. I was just returning from the chemist shop where I took them to get drugs and saw some people in my house. They said that it was Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development that sent them. They came with 1 bag of rice, 12 pieces of toilet tissue, 1 Dettol liquid, 1 packet of pears soap and 1 pears cream for children, and N2000. They said that I shouldn’t come back to the ministry again. They said the N2000 was for my sick children. I wrote thatletter on 22nd June, 2015. It was just three days ago that these officials from the ministry came to my village. My wife would have died if not the a$$istance the village meeting rendered to us.”Meanwhile, Mmadubuko is pleading with the public for a$$istanc

BREAKING NEWS: Arsenal & Real Madrid Finally Reach Agreement On Benzema

BREAKING NEWS: Arsenal & Real Madrid Finally Reach Agreement On Benzema

Arsenal Training Session
Are you one of those who had been expecting to see a top striker at Arsenal this summer? Were you totally convinced that Arsene Wenger will succeed in getting Karim Benzema from Real Madrid? If ‘yes’, then I have to tell you something but before I do, I will advise you to pick a glass of cold water and pour it down your throat before going on. Calm down!
It has finally been agreed by Arsenal and the occupants of the Santiago Bernabeu. I mean a compromise has been reached. The two sides have agreed that the transfer of Benzema to the Emirates Stadium could happen some other time which will definitely not be this summer. Sorry to break your heart.
The Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger has made it clear that the French striker will be difficult to get as the Spanish giants do not want to sell him at the moment and also because he is still under contract at his current club.
Benzema who has been seriously linked with a move to London during this transfer window has committed his future to the club and wishes to remain at the Spanish capital, Madrid.
Speaking to reporters after Liverpool held his side to a 0-0 draw on Monday night, Arsene Wenger stated that news claiming that Benzema will soon join the Gunners are all false.
“That story is dead. That story has always been created every week. When a player has a contract, it’s the club that decides,” he said.
“Real Madrid have said many times they don’t want to sell him. It’s the same for us when we have a player under contract.”
Since we now know that we can no longer get Benzema, let’s just zero our mind as if we will not sign anyone else. If any new player comes, it’s all good and if none is signed, there is nothing more we can do than back the ones we have. We also have to pray for less or no long term injuries. Cavani? That transfer doesn’t seem likely too.

10 Excuses Nigerian Guys Use To Justify Their Inability To Approach A Lady

10 Excuses Nigerian Guys Use To Justify Their Inability To Approach A Lady

Guys-Discussing-600x3961
Every guy knows that its not an easy feat to successfully approach and woo a lady. Even the most confident of guys usually need to “gather mor*le” before doing the needful.
This could stem from the fact that you don’t know what the outcome of the action you’re about taking might be.
Another reason is the fear of rejection, nobody wants to feel ridiculed or like a looser sort of. We are all created with a sense of self worth and we crave for respect and regard which is normal.
However, society has made it look like a guy who cannot approach a lady is not a “real man”. Such a guy is mocked by friends, relatives and even the female folk. As a result of this utter mockery and in order to live up to the expectation of the society, guys come up with some funny excuses to defend themselves and also to remove their mind from trying to approach ladies.
Below are some of the excuses guys give themselves and others for their inability to approach women.
1) Naija girls are gold diggers: I’m sure you’ve heard or read many guys make such comments. They be like “Naija girls too like money jare, if you no get money forget am!” The truth is that this is not a valid excuse at all. No matter your level of economic power, there is always a woman out there who will accept you the way you are. you don’t need to have money to find love anywhere, besides I know some really poor guys dating rich chicks and even eating from them sef. What you need more is self confidence and social skills.
2) I Don’t Have Time for Girls Now: I hear this all the time and all I see is a guy who is frustrated about his inability to successfully woo a woman. I mean is there any such thing as a separate time you need to have for a woman? Lolz… Guys please enlighten me on what it means to have time for women. U ask a guy “What of your girlfriend?”. He goes like “Which girlfriend, I don’t have their time oo”. When I hear this I just laugh!
3) Girls are a Distraction: For real? You that has been jobless for 5 years after graduation, how is it a girl’s fault? It is you that is a distraction to yourself not girls. How come all these footballers, musicians, entertainers, bankers, doctors, oil guys that I see change chicks like wrapper don’t get distracted, na u come dey get distracted. My guy forget excuse and do the needful.

4) Women bring Badluck: Lols… I don’t even know what to say about this one. You hear guys say that if you want to make it in life, forget women. Funny thing is, they can’t! The more they try, the more they fail. Men and women have been created to ‘complete’ each other so my guy, unless you’re g*y…..
5) She’s too Pompous/disrespectful: No my guy, you’re too timid, that’s the truth. You have the right to woo any woman you like, she has the right to agree or disagree. Don’t give away your right, exercise it!
Btw, research has shown that ladies who seem too pompous are usually much easier to convince than guys tend to think.
6) I can’t Satisfy her $exually: Most guys won’t voice out this excuse at all, only to very close friends if he’s the very open type. This however is not a valid excuse. How do you know you can’t satisfy her? How do you even know she’s after $ex? Must you Bleep every girl you date? Enough said jareh…
7) I Prefer Foreign Women to Nigerian: All na wash! So of all the millions of women in Naija, you can’t find a suitable one for yourself, na for foreign land you go see am? My guy, your problem no be Naija women, your problem is internal. Search yourself and tell urself the truth!
8) No Responsible Woman Anymore: If I hear! Maybe you want a Mary magdalene or virgin Mary. Guy, if na responsible woman be your excuse, why not enter Deeper life, Jehova Witness, mountain of Fire and the various mosques and look for them? Why look for responsible women at Allen Junction? Mtcheeew…
9) I Prefer to Roll With my Fellow Guys: You be g*y? Yes its good to have a good rapport with fellow guys, to have fun and drink with guys with no chick around once in a while. But my guy don’t use it as an excuse, because very soon those your guys will start asking you to go and look for a chick. They will soon start laughing at you bro.

FIVES THINGS MORINHO NEED TO DO TO GET BACK ON TRACK

Are the wheels falling off at Chelsea? Jose Mourinho's side haven't won a football match since their post-season tour clash against Sydney FC on June 2.
And, to add to the complications, axed team doctor Eva Carneiro is due back at the club's Cobham HQ on Monday after her tumultuous week.
Their winless pre-season raised a few eyebrows. Their toothless Community Shield defeat to Arsenal raised the alarm bells.

The opening day home draw against Swansea underlined the club's issues. Now, after Sunday's pummelling at Manchester City, the champions are on the brink of a crisis.
The good news for Mourinho is that there's still 36 league games to go. But are the mounting problems at Stamford Bridge that easily fixed?
Here, Sportsmail looks at five of the issues Mourinho needs to put straight.
Patching up internal conflicts
You don't have to be Sherlock Holmes to work out Chelsea Football Club isn't a happy ship at the moment.
Mourinho hasn't been his usual charming self this summer, it's certainly not gone unnoticed by the players. Something is troubling him, and he's making sure those around him know about it.
All that has made for what some have described as an 'edgy' atmosphere at the club's Cobham HQ.

Vincent Kompany: I have never been more prepared for a game than against Chelsea

Vincent Kompany believes he has never felt more prepared for a game than his Manchester City side's 3-0 demolition job of Chelsea on Sunday.
The City skipper noted how the visitors succumbed to Manuel Pellegrini's tactics - saying Chelsea fell into every trap set for them.
Kompany was imperious at the heart of a City defence untroubled by Diego Costa and Co, and puts his team's performance down to training in the week leading up to the Etihad clash.

'I have never felt as prepared for a game as I did for this one,' Kompany said.
'You could see it – we were setting traps all over the pitch and it planned out perfectly for them.
'That may be the advantage of only playing one match a week at the moment

The header was Kompany's second in two matches after netting at West Brom last Monday. Being his side's top scorer, however, is not an accolade the Belgian expects to hold for long.
He said: 'I don't expect it to go on for too long, but I am probably more happy about the two clean sheets.
'If I am top-scorer for too long, we are in massive trouble!
'I want Sergio [Aguero] to catch up quickly and go on to be top scorer in the Premier League again.'

Manchester United should never have let David de Gea's contract run into final year... it's poor management, admits Gary Neville

Former defender Gary Neville says that the fact David de Gea is reportedly seeking a move away from Old Trafford is due to 'bad management' on Manchester United's part.
Red Devils boss Louis van Gaal claimed the goalkeeper no longer wants to play for the club, although De Gea himself said that he was shocked to have been left out of the Dutchman's side.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, Neville insisted that the situation has been allowed to develop because of poor management by United in allowing the Spanish keeper's contract to run into its final year.

Black box of crashed Bristow helicopter recovered from lagoon

Rescue team after recovering the missing bodies
Two days after a Bristow helicopter carrying 12 passengers from an oil rig crashed in the lagoon in the Oworonshoki area of Lagos, the Accident Investigation Bureau announced that it had recovered the helicopter’s black box.
Six passengers died while the remaining six were said to be receiving treatment in a Lagos hospital.
The black box, also known as a flight recorder, is an electronic recording device placed in an aircraft for the purpose of facilitating the investigation of aviation accidents and incidents.

The black box contains the cockpit voice and the flight data recorders.
The AIB Commissioner, Dr. Felix Abali, displayed the two devices to aviation correspondents at the bureau’s headquarters in Lagos. Meanwhile, the AIB spokesperson, Mr. Tunji Oketunbi, told our correspondent that the agency would get in touch with the oil company whose workers were involved in the accident before the manifest would be made public.
He said, “Yes, we have the manifest, but we cannot release it yet until all protocols are fully observed. We will contact the oil company to know when we should release it, after they must have got in touch with the family members of the victims.”
The External Communications Manager, Bristow Helicopters, Julie King, told our correspondent in an email that the company would keep the public abreast of whatever information was deemed important.
She said, “As required by the Nigerian law, Bristow has released the requested passenger manifest to the NCAA and the NCAIB. We will continue to release details about the incident.”
Meanwhile, Bristow Helicopters said it was conducting a comprehensive inspection review of its S-76 fleet and that, with the full endorsement of the NCAA and the AIB, it had resumed flying those aircraft that had been inspected.
“We would wish to reiterate our appreciation for the help, support and understanding we have received from the NCAA, the AIB, our clients and other industry stakeholders during this very difficult period,” Bristow’s Regional Director Africa, Duncan Moore, said in a press release on the company’s website.
The company had on Thursday suspended operations, less than 24 hours after one of its helicopters crashed into the Lagos Lagoon in Oworonshoki area.
The company added that it would continue to cooperate fully with the AIB on the ongoing investigation.

She said, “As required by the Nigerian law, Bristow has released the requested passenger manifest to the NCAA and the NCAIB. We will continue to release details about the incident.” Meanwhile, Bristow Helicopters said it was conducting a comprehensive inspection review of its S-76 fleet and that, with the full endorsement of the NCAA and the AIB, it had resumed flying those aircraft that had been inspected.

Dominican Republic jails four Frenchmen for drug trafficking

Dominican Republic jails four Frenchmen for drug trafficking

Four Frenchmen were sentenced Friday to 20 years in prison in the Dominican Republic for drug trafficking following a long-delayed trial known in France as the “Air Cocaine” affair.
Pilot Pascal Fauret, co-pilot Bruno Odos, passenger Nicolas Pisapia and alleged broker Alain Castany were arrested in March 2013 as they were about to take off from the Caribbean resort of Punta Cana.
Dominican authorities say they were preparing to take off in a mid-size Dassault Falcon 50 jet with 26 suitcases carrying 680 kilograms (1,500 pounds) of cocaine.
After deliberations lasting 10 hours, the court found the men guilty of the “crime of associating to … possess illegal drugs.”
Of the 10 Dominicans charged with complicity in the case, six were acquitted and four others given sentences ranging from five to 10 in prison.
The lawyer for the French pilots, Maria Elena Gratereaux, said she would appeal.

The Frenchmen have always protested their innocence and had argued they did not know the drugs were on the plane.
But Prosecutor Milciades Guzman repeated on Friday that the cocaine had been transported “to the plane via a hole in the security fence, in the pilots’ presence”.
French investigators are also probing the “suspicious behavior” of passengers from a Falcon 50 jet that landed in December 2012 in the Mediterranean resort of Saint-Tropez, with Fauret, Odos and Pisapia on board.
A French customs official is under investigation for allegedly helping two vehicles unload ten suitcases from the aircraft.
Investigators say two identical deliveries took place earlier in 2012, and a third one was scheduled for March 2013, when the Frenchmen were arrested in the Dominican Republic.

Cult groups, Fulani herdsmen kill 761 in seven months.

Cult groups, Fulani herdsmen kill 761 in seven months

Fulani herdsmen
No fewer than 761 persons have lost their lives to cultism and clashes involving Fulani herdsmen in Nigeria between January and July this year, Saturday PUNCH has learnt.
Findings by Saturday PUNCH, which was based on reported cases of violence involving cultism and Fulani herdsmen in the media, revealed the information.
The analysis showed that out of the figure, violence involving the Fulani nomads claimed 621 lives across the country within the period, while that of cult clashes claimed the remaining 140 victims.
It should, however, be noted that some killings were unreported and the attacks also left several persons injured, some of whom could have lost their lives later.
Of the 621 who died in clashes involving Fulani herdsmen, more than half of the deaths occurred in Benue State, a major flashpoint of the crisis in the country.
In January, 27 persons were killed in violent incidents involving Fulani herdsmen. In February, 96 persons died in similar circumstances; 236 in March; 28 in April; and five in May.
One of the most deadly attacks in the state this year occurred in March, when on a Sunday morning, Fulani herdsmen attacked Egba village in Agatu Local Government Area, killing 90 persons.
Other major flashpoints in the country as regards clashes involving Fulani herdsmen include communities in Taraba, Kogi, Nasarawa, Plateau, Kaduna, Zamfara, Ekiti and Kwara states where scores of people were also killed.
In Taraba State, for instance, 47 persons reportedly died in similar circumstances in January, 15 in April, eight in May, and four in July.
Also, on Saturday, April 4, clashes between suspected Fulani cattle rearers and local youth vigilantes from rival Hausa ethnic group in Zamfara State left at least 72 persons dead.
In Kaduna, 11 persons died in similar circumstances in January and 13 in June, this year.
Lagos State is the major flashpoint for cult violence in the country with the state alone claiming at least 80 out of the 140 victims.
A senior police officer at the Lagos State Police Command recently said no fewer than 80 persons were killed in cult clashes in the state between January and June.
The police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity noted that the figure could be higher than 80 because not all cases were reported to the police.
He said, “We have had so many cult killings within the past six months. Most of the cases involved former university students who left school and decided to carry on with their cult related activities after school in their areas.
“The number of cases reported cannot be less than 80, and that is leaving out the number of unreported cases.”
Meanwhile in July, there were at least two incidents involving cult clashes in Lagos, each claiming at least one life.
In January alone, no fewer than 16 persons were killed in cult-related circumstances, while 17 others were killed in similar circumstances in February.
Major flashpoints of cult attacks in the state are Mushin, Somolu, Bariga, Ikorodu, Ketu, Onipanu, Bariga, and Igando.
Next to Lagos are Ogun and Delta states, where 21 and 15 persons were reported dead in cult clashes between January and July.
In Edo State, which was the next deadliest state as regards the number of casualties to cult clashes, 10 persons reportedly died in similar circumstances.
A United Kingdom-trained criminologist and Chairman, Puma Eye Security Services, Mr. Pedro Ayandokun, blamed the recent cult clashes in the country on youth unemployment, illiteracy, and poor police and parental control.
He, therefore, called on the government to encourage community policing and increase investments in vocational training to engage the youth.
He said, “There should be compulsory education for children and vocational centres in each of the local governments in the country.
“Community Development Associations should also live up to their responsibilities and work with the police to dismantle illicit youth gatherings and forestall these killings because they have to be stopped.”
On the clashes involving Fulani herdsmen, Ayandokun suggested that the government introduce a legislation to address the issue.
He said, “Such legislation should carve a way for the herdsmen to graze their cattle and spell out how and where they would graze.
“It should establish a task force to enforce the laws that are spelt out by the legislation. There should also be a process of reconciliation because there will be a need for sensitisation since the herdsmen believe that there is nowhere they cannot take their cattle to graze while community residents want to protect their farms.”
The Force Public Relations Officer, Mr. Emmanuel Ojukwu, did not answer calls to his mobile phone or respond to a text message sent to him.

Niger floods kill four, displace 20,000

Niger floods kill four, displace 20,000

At least four people have died and more than 20,000 have been affected by floods in Niger caused by weeks of heavy rain, the United Nations said Friday.
The bad weather has destroyed 2,170 homes and flooded nearly 545 hectares of agricultural land, the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said in a statement.
Around 3,100 displaced victims are currently living in schools or have been taken in by host families, the agency said citing Niger’s emergency civil protection services.
The bad weather is showing no sign of abating as the rainy season continues in the impoverished sub-Saharan country, which has often faced severe food crises due to flooding or drought.
Since late July, local media have reported repeated floods, particularly in central and southern Niger.
In the capital Niamey, the authorities have asked residents living near the edge of the Niger River to leave their homes because of the flood threat. The water level is at 580 centimetres (19 feet), well above the “alert” threshold of 530 centimetres, according to the Niger Basin Authority (NBA).
Of the eight regions of Niger, only Diffa in the east, which is home to more than 100,000 refugees who have fled violence in neighbouring Nigeria, has not been affected by the bad weather.
In 2014, floods have killed dozens of people and affected hundreds of thousands, according to official figures.
The Niger River, the third largest in Africa, has a flood basin of over two million square kilometres (770,000 square miles) which is home to more than 100 million people from Guinea to Nigeria.

Drama at Ooni’s palace: Wives, children barred from Ooni’s burial

The final burial rites of the late Ooni of Ife, Oba Okunade Sijuwade, Olubuse II, was performed on Friday, but his wives, children and family members were unable to pay their last respects as they were barred from the programme.
Some other people who had expected to see the body of the monarch lie in state were also disappointed as his remains were neither brought out for people to see nor was any casket displayed during the burial service.
The event was attended by the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, Rear Admiral Akin Aduwo (retd.), Gen. Alani Akinriande (retd.), Senator Babajide Omoworare, Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko and many other dignitaries and government representatives.
Traditional prayers were offered for the late monarch by Tadimole Awo Ilare, Chief Faloba. The event was conducted in less than three hours.
A source at the palace told one of our correspondents that no member of the royal family was allowed to see the remains of the monarch since he was brought back to the palace.
He said, “As we are holding this interdenominational service here, those concerned are performing their own rites inside the palace where the body is kept.
“You can see that the gates of the palace are locked and nobody is allowed to go inside. Nobody can see him again except those who will bury him.
“The wives and children were not even supposed to see his corpse at all but tradition was broken this time around because he (Sijuwade) died in London. But no family member can see him again. Those performing the rites are there now and they will complete it today (Friday). He will be buried in the middle of the night, but nobody will be there apart from those who will lower him into the grave.”
The source said those who saw the bodies of the previous Oonis were attacked by smallpox and did not survive the ailment.
A monarch in Osun State, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, disclosed to one of our correspondents that traditional rulers of the town went to various shrines, including the Obalufon shrine in Ife to perform some rites for Sijuwade on Friday.
He said the traditional rulers later went into Ooni’s palace shortly before an interdenominational burial service for the king commenced on the palace premises.
The monarch said, “Nobody can see the Ooni, not even the US President, Barrack Obama. We are with him. It’s only the initiates who can see him. His wives and children cannot see him.”
During the service, the Preacher, Bishop of Ife Diocese of Anglican Communion, Rt. Rev. Oluranti Odubogun, said despite his riches, Oba Sijuwade died when it was God’s time to take him away.
The bishop, who was represented by the Very Rev. Olusola Akanbi, said the Ooni brought fame and popularity to his domain.
His said the monarch’s demise demonstrated that every mortal man would die no matter their status.
He said, “Baba has gone. He will stand before the King of Kings who will judge what he did while here on earth.
“Some persons have started jostling to succeed him now but we must all remember the judgement day when we will give account of all that we did on earth.
“I urge you to make today a memorable one and give your life to Christ. Jesus is the only way, accept him today.”
But as the interdenominational service was about to take off, there was a mild drama as worshippers of Oro cult in Ife, also called Isoro, stormed the venue and attempted to stop the service. The worshippers claimed that it was a sacrilege to hold an interdenominational service for the departed king. And as the service went on outside the palace, the traditional worshippers sang and danced inside the palace.
Women barred
Also, our correspondents learnt that as part of the palace tradition and custom, women are forbidden from entering the palace while traditional rites are being performed for a passing monarch.
As the interdenominational service was going on, sounds of gunshots suddenly rent the air, making some of those present at the service to scamper for safety.
A reliable source told Saturday PUNCH that more gunshots would be fired later in the day, as from 5.00 pm, adding that curfew to last for seven days would start by 4.00 pm on Friday.
One of the palace chiefs, Sooko Adelugba, told one of our correspondents that many parts of the town had already been deserted by residents who were eager to comply with the curfew as announced by the palace.
One of the initiates told one of our correspondents who had tried to interview him that it was an abomination to speak publicly of traditional rites offered for a departed Ooni.
His final resting place
Meanwhile, fresh facts have emerged as to why the monarch would be buried beside the immediate past Ooni, Oba Adesoji Aderemi.
It was gathered that the cemetery inside the palace, where other Oonis were buried, was full, which informed the decision to build a mausoleum inside the palace for Oba Aderemi.
The mausoleum is said to be located at the rear end of the palace.
A palace source said the final resting place of Sijuwade had been constructed in the mausoleum, adding that the cemetery inside the palace is called Ile Nla (mighty house).
Traditionalists clash with residents
The worshippers of Oro cult in Ife, also called ‘Isoro’, clashed with residents who were erecting tents for the interdenominational burial service at the frontage of Enuwa Palace.
A prominent chief in Ife, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the ‘Isoro’ descended on the people who erected the tents because they (initiates) wanted to observe a seven-day burial rites for the departed king.
The chief said, “The ‘Isoro’ saw the erection of tents for an interdenominational burial service as a sacrilege against custom and tradition.
“They descended on the people erecting the tents and flogged them heavily. They destroyed the tents and swore never to allow anybody do any interdenominational service at the palace.”
The chief revealed that the state government had to wade into the crisis before the service was allowed.
He said, “It took the intervention of officials of the state government, who appealed to the ‘Isoro’ to allow the people to hold the interdenominational service before the issue was resolved. If not for the intervention of the state government, the interdenominational service would not have been allowed.”
Meanwhile, Saturday PUNCH learnt that Sijuwade’s family members flew to see his body immediately after he transited in a highbrow hospital in England.
Investigation by Saturday PUNCH revealed that Sijuwade’s eldest son, Tokunbo, and some other family members flew to England immediately the monarch breathed his last to join the king’s three wives, Morisola, Ladun and Odunola – who were already there.
Morisola is the eldest wife, Ladun is the second wife and Odunola, who is the daughter of the immediate past Orangun of Ila, is the youngest wife.
It was learnt that the family members flew down to England to pay their last respect to the departed monarch.
The Araba of Osogbo land, Chief Yemi Elebuibon, who spoke with one of our correspondents on Friday, disclosed that the corpse of the Ooni belonged to Ile-Ife and not his family.
He said, “The traditional burial rites of the kings of Ile-Ife and Oyo are strictly complied with and they are comprehensive.
“When the Ooni dies, the body becomes that of the town. The ‘Isoro’ cult group will take over. The ‘Isoro’ initiates are the ones who worship the ‘Oro’ deity.
“It is the ‘Isoro’ people that would inform the various deities, who were worshipped and appeased when the Ooni was crowned, that he (the monarch) is no more.
“It’s a rite. Nothing must stop it.”
The Araba dispelled the belief that the heart of the late king would be fed to the next Ooni.
He said, “The eating of the heart of a departed King by an incoming one belonged to the past. It no longer exists. People still make this insinuation because many are barred from witnessing the burial of a king.
“What the incoming king will eat is the heart of an animal and not that of a human. Nobody would be buried with the Ooni. Nobody would be killed for any form of sacrifice.”
Elebuibon explained that animals are now used for the burial rites of Yoruba Obas because of modernisation, noting that Christianity and Islam also stopped the use of humans for sacrifice when God stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son, Isaac.
Let Sijuwade rest
As the guests who attended the interdenominational service departed, a man in white robe and a white cap appeared at the palace entrance and told some of the people around the gate to leave the vicinity of the palace and allow the monarch to rest.
He said, “The service is over, it is time for you all to start going. Leave the palace and let Sijuwade rest. You are warned to leave.”
Meanwhile, a cleric, Evangelist Toluwase Akeredolu, had disputed insinuations that Sijuwade, as a prominent monarch, was in the cult. Akeredolu had said that Oba Sijuwade died as a born-again Christian.
Akeredolu said this on July 29 after the transition of the monarch was announced by the media.
The cleric, an evangelist with the Christ Apostolic Church, said the monarch had few weeks before his transition, confessed all his sins to God after he preached the gospel of Jesus Christ to him.
Akeredolu said he was privileged to have ministered to the monarch few weeks before his death.
He said, “Oba Sijuwade told the congregation at the last crusade we organised in Ile-Ife that he had forsaken sins and accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and personal saviour. He confessed publicly that he would live the rest of his life to serve the Almighty God.
“During the revival, Oba Sijuwade said he had committed the rest of his lifetime to Christ, the saviour of all and had sung the popular song ‘All to Jesus, I surrender.’”
It will be recalled that the late monarch dropped the title of ‘Oluaye’ (owner of the universe) in 2010 in difference to the Almighty God.”
