Six people, including two suspected suicide bombers, have died in two bomb explosions that occurred on Tuesday in Damaturu.
DSP Toyin Gbadegeshin, the Yobe Police Command Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
Gbadegeshin said that three others were in critical condition, while 40 others who sustained various degrees of injury had been evacuated to hospitals in the area.
He said one of the explosions involving a female suicide bomber of about 12 years of age, happened at the entrance of the Damaturu main motor park.
“The girl detonated the explosive at the screening centre of the motor park gate, killing herself and four others, including a pregnant woman and a baby.
The other explosive which went off at about the same time with the first one at Pompomari when a suspected male suicide bomber sensing he will be apprehended, ran into a nearby bush and the explosive went off killing him alone,’’ the police spokesman said.
Meanwhile, Alhaji Abdullahi Bego, Director of Press to Yobe Governor, described the incident as “sad and unfortunate.”

Baba Sala’s health worsens, rushed to UCH

There are fears in family circle on Tuesday concerning the health of popular Yoruba actor, Moses Olaiya, popularly known as Baba Sala.
Sources in the family said the aged actor was rushed to the University College Hospital, Ibadan on Monday night after his health deteriorated in his Ilesa, Osun State, residence.
One of his sons confirmed to one of our correspondents that his father was rushed to UCH on Monday.
He, however, denied that his father had died as being speculated in some quarters.

Ekiti varsity expels two for exam malpractices

The authorities of the Federal University, Oye Ekiti, Ekiti State, have expelled two students for engaging in examination malpractices during the 2013/2014 academic session.
Speaking with journalists in Oye Ekiti, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Isaac Asuzu, who did not reveal the identity of the students, said they were expelled after being found guilty by the University Disciplinary Committee.
He disclosed that about 6,000 applicants sat for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, out of which only 1,000 would be admitted in compliance with the carrying capacity allotted by the National Universities Commission.
Asuzu said the institution had ensured that cultism did not exist, adding that adequate facilities were being put in place to secure accreditation for 29 out of the 30 courses when the NUC visit the institution by August ending.
He disclosed that the University had constructed three new laboratories for Science Faculty, a central laboratory for the Faculty of Agriculture and completed the Virtual Library, where students could have access to e-books and international journals.
“We are very optimistic that many of these courses will get full accreditation.  We have provided facilities that can meet up the NUC’s standard.
“What makes our achievements more rewarding was the fact that we did all these facilities through the internally generated revenues of this institution. We are working to meet the standards and nothing shall be spared to make sure that the standard is not compromised,” he said.

Asuzu added that the University had taken delivery of equipment worth N500million to equip the newly built laboratories that would boost research in the institution.

We’ll respond to heavy loss against Pillars – 3SC

Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan said Kano Pillars deserved the 4-1 victory the hosts recorded against them on Sunday in Kano.
The Oluyole warriors however, described the defeat as a temporary set-back to their rejuvenated team spirit.
Media officer of the club, Jubril Arowolo, told our correspondent after the team returned to Ibadan from Kano that the players had been urged to put the defeat behind them and look ahead to the next match.
He said after reviewing the loss in Kano, it was time for the team to respond to the heavy defeat by getting a good result when they visit Kwara United on Sunday.
Arowolo said there was no point looking for a scapegoat among the players.
The spokesman added, “We have to put the defeat behind us because it was just a game out of many; you cannot blame anybody because it was a collective failure.
“We have started preparation ahead of the next match, where we hope to respond to the disappointment. There is no time to waste.

“Pillars did what they had to do in Kano. The goals were coming and they were good goals. The officiating was above average too. We played well but lost all our scoring chances except one towards the closing stage.”
The club’s midweek match against Nasarawa United in Ibadan was postponed because the visitors have a Confederation Cup match.
Arowolo said this would present an opportunity for the players to prepare well for the Sunday match in Ilorin.
In the first round, 3SC beat Kwara United in Ibadan by 2-0 with goals coming from Najeem Olukokun and Femi Ajayi.
“We must respect our opponents and face the truth. There is no easy match in the league. Everyone is like the final. Kwara lost to Wikki Tourists in Ilorin in their last home fixture and they visit Heartland on Wednesday.
“Maybe, we will have the physical advantage, having had the time to rest but our hosts would not want to disappoint their fans again. We must prepare well for the match,” he added.

Customs chief resigns, says I’ve nothing to fear

Retired Comptroller-General, Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Abdullahi Dikko
ADVERTISEMENT
President Muhammadu Buhari has accepted the resignation of the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Alhaji Dikko Abdullahi.
With the acceptance, Abdullahi is expected to proceed on voluntary retirement from Tuesday (today).
He had earlier written a letter dated August 3 to the President in which he notified Buhari of his desire to proceed on voluntary retirement from Tuesday.
Buhari’s approval of Abdullahi’s request was dated August 14 and personally signed by the President.
He thanked the NCS boss for his services to the country in the last six years.
The President’s letter was titled, “Voluntary retirement from the Nigeria Customs Service.”
The approval read, “Dear, Alhaji D.I. Abdullahi. I write to acknowledge the receipt of your letter Ref. No. NCS/ADM/HQ/P. 35802 of 3rd August, 2015 conveying your decision to voluntarily retire from the Nigeria Customs Service with effect from Tuesday, August 18, 2015.
“I note with appreciation your services to this nation, especially as the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service in the last six years.
“Accordingly, I hereby approve your voluntary retirement from the Nigeria Customs Service with effect from 18th of August, 2015.
“I wish you the very best in your future endeavours.
“Yours sincerely, Muhammadu Buhari.”
Abdullahi had in his letter to the President thanked him for the confidence and trust reposed on him since he (Buhari) was inaugurated on May 29.
He said by August 18, he would be six years in office as the Comptroller-General of the NCS.
He recalled that on assumption of office, he articulated a six-point agenda which he vigorously pursued.
He said the agenda had positively impacted on the efficiency and performance of officers of the service and had drastically changed the negative perception of the service.
He listed the six-point agenda to include capacity building, introduction of e-Customs, enhancing productivity through improved welfare package, moral rebirth for discipline and integrity in service, collaboration and partnering stakeholders and international organisations, as well as fostering understanding of the Service in the eye of the general public using an intensified and a well-coordinated public relations platform.
He added that the decision to resign “is taken with a view to allowing young people to take over the mantle of leadership of the service in order to sustain and improve on my legacy.”
The President has yet to name Abdullahi’s successor at the time of filing this report.
Speaking with State House correspondents shortly after paying a farewell visit to President Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday, Abdullahi said he had nothing to fear about the ongoing investigation of revenue-earning agencies being conducted by the Federal Government.
Abdullahi said revenue appreciated under his watch by 20 per cent.
He said, “The only way the NCS can move forward is by sacrifice; to give chance to others so that they can continue with the legacy that we have up in place.
“Revenue appreciated by 20 per cent from when I took over and the officers that did the work are still around and I think that the NCS, I stand to be corrected, is the only service that is fully automated in the system of operation.
“We have no fear. The time I’m leaving is the time I feel those young ones that have developed the software can manage the software.
“So, that is basically the reason.”

Naira rises to 217 against dollar

The naira appreciated against the United States dollar at the parallel market on Monday to 217, from 221 recorded on Friday.
Naira notes
The naira rose on the back of weak demand for the dollar at the foreign exchange market
Forex traderslinked this to an improved dollar liquidity occasioned by the sustained sales of the greenback by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Reacting to the rising fortune of the local currency, the Acting President, Association of Bureau De Change Operators, Alhaji Aminu Gwadabe, said, “The market has started feeling the effect of the dollar sales by the central bank in the last two weeks and tight measures introduced to prevent cross boarder currency trafficking.”
The CBN had increased the frequency of dollar sales to the BDC operators two weeks ago to twice-weekly from the usual once a week previously in a move meant to increase liquidity in the market and support the local currency.
Traders said bank customers were no longer willing to hold dollars after the central bank banned dollar cash deposits into domiciliary accounts.
“We expect to see more rallies in the market if the central bank could sustain its support for the naira,” Harrison Owoh, a bureau de change operator said, Reuters reported.
The naira was unchanged at the official interbank market at 197 to the dollar, where the CBN has maintained a tight control by pegging it to the rate of 197 to the dollar
The naira had weakened on the parallel market to as much as 245 to the dollar last month, on persistent dollar demand after central bank limited importers’ access to dollars on the official interbank market to buy a wide range of goods, in order to save the external reserves.
The local currency later rebounded to 216 at the parallel market as Deposit Money Banks started rejecting cash deposits in dollars a few weeks ago.
The naira had, however, weakened to about 223 last week before rising to 217 on Monday
Analysts expect the naira to continue rising, saying it is good for the economy.
The Head, Investment and Research, Afrinvest West Africa, Mr. Ayodeji Ebo, had said that the gains made by the naira was good for the economy, adding that it would help the CBN to gauge the true value of the currency in the event of a possible devaluation in the near future.
“If there is a convergence between the interbank and parallel market, the CBN may possibly review its restrictions imposed on the forex market,” he added.
A currency analyst at Ecobank Nigeria, Mr. Kunle Ezun, said if the trend continued, the naira might rise to as much as 200 against the dollar.

Dr. Lukman Ogunjimi, President,
Association of Resident Doctors,
University College Hospital, IbadanObasanjo persuaded us to call off strike – doctors

ADVERTISEMEN
After 105 days of strike, resident doctors of the University College Hospital, Ibadan, returned to work on Monday after former President Olusegun Obasanjo had intervened.
The President of the association in the UCH, Dr. Lukman Ogunjimi, who thanked the Central Council of Ibadan Indigenes for also intervening in the crisis, said Obasanjo invited all major players in the crisis, including those from other affected teaching hospitals in the South-West, for a meeting on August 12, 2015 in Abeokuta, where it was decided that the strike should be suspended.

He said clinical services in the UCH had been hampered by infrastructural collapse, like non-working patients’ elevators, with attending negative health implications for members of staff. Other services, like lack of laboratory materials and disposables, he said, were also there.
He said, “The meeting was facilitated by the first Director of Administration in UCH, Doja Adewolu, who is an Egba High Chief. He was concerned that patients were suffering while the strike continued, just as we were concerned also. The President of the Association of Resident Doctors in the UCH; Lagos University Teaching Hospital; Yaba Psychiatric Hospital; Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta; Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria; medical elders and Chief Medical Directors in all the hospitals were present at the meeting. The former president played a fatherly role and persuaded us to return to work while negotiation continues with the hospitals’ managements.”
Ogunjimi said that at the meeting, the hospitals’ managements agreed that there was a letter from the Ministry of Health concerning skipping and that after expressing commitment to honour it in the next budget, the doctors were compelled to return to work.
“Our management has agreed to start working on our agitations locally while the 2016 budget would capture the monetary aspect. A statement of fact, which UCH management did not deny, is that there was an increase of N940m in the personnel subvention of the hospital. Our stand is that this can be used to pay skipping allowance since payment of salary from personnel subvention can never be referred to as misappropriation, more importantly now that the permanent secretary in the health ministry has expressly reiterated the directive for skipping,” he added.

President Muhammadu Buhari

Buhari to recover govt houses from Jonathan’s men

President Muhammadu Buhari has concluded plans to recover all government property still in possession of government officials who served under former President Goodluck Jonathan.
The Federal Government’s assets including vehicles, buildings, generator sets and others were said to still be in the possession of the former government officials weeks after they had left office.
Irked by the development, Buhari was said to have set up a committee made up of civil servants and security agencies to identify and recover the unreturned public assets from the former political appointees.
The development is in continuation of ongoing efforts of the President to reclaim Nigeria’s stolen resources.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, confirmed the development to journalists on Sunday.
He said, “That is precisely the case. Even here at the Presidential Villa, there are cars and other property belonging to the government, which are yet to be returned.
“The property belong to the Nigerian people. We are not trying to humiliate anyone by asking them to return their cars or houses.”
The presidential spokesman however did not disclose the identities of former government officials said to be still in possession of government property.
But he expressed the conviction that the committee set up by the President would recover all the government assets.
When asked whether the state and local governments were facing similar challenges with retrieving government property from their predecessors, Shehu said that he was not in a position to confirm or deny this.
He added, however, that he would not be surprised if that was the case, as this attitude of holding on to government property even after leaving office must be a natural outcome of the culture of impunity that prevailed in Nigeria over the past years of the Peoples Democratic Party’s regime.
“But change has come. That is why we have to do things differently now. Imagine how much Nigeria will save by retrieving and re-using these government property instead of purchasing new ones for new government officials,” he said.

Buhari to recover govt houses from Jonathan’s men

The UN said on Monday in Abuja that it has sponsored 500 victims of Boko Haram violence from three North-East states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe to acquire vocational skills.
Mr Matthew Alao, UN Conflict Prevention and Peace Building Analyst, told the News Agency of Nigeria that the programme was under the UNDP Livelihood Support Scheme for the zone.
Alao explained that an orientation programme for the 500 selected beneficiaries would commence today, August 17, at the Citizenship and Leadership Training Centre in Jos, Plateau.
According to him, the skills acquisition programme is the first phase of intervention by the UN to ameliorate the sufferings of the displaced persons.
Alao said that the skills training would cover hair dressing, tailoring, knitting, catering and decorations as well as GSM repair, shoe-making, leather works and computer studies.
According to him, the participants will also undertake specialised training on conflict resolution and peace building.
Alao said, “A total of 500 beneficiaries who are victims of Boko Haram from three North East states of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe will be placed in a two-week compulsory orientation programme.
“They are going to undergo physical exercise, training, capacity building on mediation, conflict prevention, conflict transformation, social integration, peaceful coexistence for two weeks.
“We received over 2,000 applications and engaged in rigorous screening exercise out of which we selected the 500 that genuinely need this assistance.
“We took the successful 500 candidates for 2-weeks intensive course on mental and physical training.
“We are also going to train them on mediation and conflict transformation as well as business management; after that, we will put then on six-month to one-year training.”
The UN official noted the intervention was necessitated by the negative effects of the activities of Boko Haram insurgency on the people of the North-East.
“Some of them had means of livelihood before, but unfortunately their means of sustaining livelihood have been cut short because of the Boko Haram insurgency.
“But we want to assure them that for every one that is impacted in one way or the other, they will be accommodated in the various phases of the Early Recovery Programme,” he said.
Alao said that the UN would continue to support the displace persons until peace was restored in the area.
